Make your bedroom a sanctuary

Your bedroom should be a place for sleeping and relaxing. Unless there's really no other option, don't let it be the place where you pay bills, catch up on office work or rumble with the kids. Keep it quiet, clean and peaceful.

Exercise. Exercise. Exercise.

We know it's not easy. But increasing your heart rate for just 20-30 minutes a day will help you sleep. It doesn't matter what you do - run, walk, swim, cycle - what's important is that you do something. And do it in the morning or afternoon. Exercising at night will only make falling asleep more difficult.

Watch what you eat and drink

You know the things to avoid. The usual suspects like alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes aren't good for your health and definitely won't help you sleep better. And try to avoid a large, heavy meal at night. This can cause indigestion and interfere with your normal sleep cycle.

Relax before bedtime

Don't go to bed pumped up and excited. Take the time to relax and unwind before you're ready to hit the hay. Try meditating or deep breathing, have a warm bath or read a few pages of a book. (Anything by Hemingway, Joyce or Tolstoy is sure to have you catching z's in next to no time!)

Hide the clock

There's nothing worse than lying awake in bed, unable to get to sleep. And the presence of your illuminated bedside clock watching you every minute only adds to the pressure. So to avoid feeling stressed and anxious, place your clock where you can't see it. And start counting those sheep.
